Your governance may be slowing you down.

One of the more persistent assumptions in organisations is that good governance inevitably comes at the expense of speed.

The thinking is understandable. More oversight, more approvals and more control should reduce risk. Yet, looking across organisations, the relationship appears to be more nuanced than that. The organisations that adapt most effectively don’t necessarily have less governance. They have governance that has been designed differently. That distinction matters because governance is often treated as something organisations simply have. In reality, it is a series of design choices.

Who makes decisions.

How close those decisions are made to the work.

How frequently priorities are reviewed.

How quickly information moves through the organisation.

These choices shape how an organisation responds when circumstances change.

One of the observations emerging from the Future-Ready Benchmark is that organisations with strong adaptability have not abandoned governance. They have redesigned it to support responsiveness as well as accountability. Perhaps the more interesting question for leadership teams is not whether they have enough governance. It is what their governance has actually been designed to optimise for.

The answer often explains far more about an organisation’s ability to adapt than the transformation programme itself.
